The fitting of a Carbon Monoxide Detector

CO is a colourless, odourless, tasteless toxic gas produced by fuel burning appliances or vehicle engines. Mild doses can cause headaches, nausea and flu-like symptoms, higher doses can cause a coma, brain damage or death. In October 2010 the Government changed the Building Regulations for England to require a Carbon Monoxide Alarm to be installed in the same room as a solid fuel, wood burning stove or open fire for all new installations. However the legislation did not extend to existing housing stock, we would recommend the installation of a CO Alarm for all houses that have a solid fuel or woodburning appliance fitted and in use.

Thefitting of a Carbon Monoxide Detector will alert you to the dangers before theyhave a chance to do harm. Fitted on the wall near the ceiling of the room thefire is in, your CO Alarm will emit a high pitched sound when it detects anunsafe build-up of poisonous fumes. CO Alarms should be treated in the same waySmoke Alarms are, as a vital part of your family’s safety. However a CO Alarmwill never be a substitute for the correct and proper installation of yourappliance or open fire.

This reproduction period mantelpiece has over 72 hours worth of skilled hand carving on it's freeze and legs, with a Griffin design to each side of the center block. Shown in Waxed Pine it is also available in white primed, Mahogany and Oak. As with all of our products it can be manufactured to your exact sizes, and with a variety of marble panel and hearth combinations.

Chimney Fire Safety week starts Monday 25th July - Sunday 31st July 2011

• Ensure your chimney is swept regularly
• Keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained
• Be careful when using open fires to keep warm. Make sure you always use a fire guard
to protect against flying sparks from hot embers
• Ensure the fire is extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house
• Chimneys should be swept according to the type of fuel used
(always consult your NACS Chimney Sweep for advice)
• Never interrupt the air supply by blocking air vents or air bricks

Marmocer tiles 'the best of two worlds'

Our showroom now has displays of the Marmocer line from Beltrami. This product combines marble and ceramic together in a tile of 1.2cm thickness. The top layer is marble of 4cm, bonded onto a composite ceramic layer. The tiles have a small bevel on the edges.

New Fogo Stoves added to lineup

Fogo Montanha have added a new range of wood stoves to their collection.

Named the Vitro they are available in 700, 800 and 900mm widths with a choice of three trim styles. The EH series also benefits from a 560mm wide model which has a slightly shallower firebox, making it more suitable for existing UK chimneys.

UKTV Food choose Hambledon to decorate the set of Family Super Cooks

UKTV Food set designers have chosen the Hambledon fireplace in Honed Atlantic Gold with a polished black granite interior, together with the Milan hand made steel fire basket to decorate part of the set for their latest cookery show "Family Super Cooks"

Standardisation for Fireplaces

Is a change coming to the way we manufacture fireplaces.

British Standard BS1251: 1987 is currently undergoing a major review, this standard covers the manufacture of fireplaces and their components. Currently the standard (due to it's age) is aimed at fireplaces for solid fuel use, however there is widespread feeling that it should apply to all fireplaces, regardless of fuel type.

I am looking for industry views on this subject, and I would welcome comments from any UK based manufacturer or importer of fireplaces, and or components covered under BS1251. As an industry you will have an ideal opportunity to have your voice heard on this important matter. Don't let it go to waste, have your say now, not when it's all been decided for you.
