Wood trends

Wood is again becoming a strong choice in recent fireplace buying trends. Having suffered a decline in recent years in favour of the lighter tones of limestone and marble, wood is re-immerging as a strong contender again in the fireplace buying process.

Simple designs like the Boxgrove and the Keymer are again top of the choice list with the buying public. However there is also a trend towards the ornately hand carved designs, such as the Guestling and Copthorne. We are also seeing an increase in the amount of bespoke wooden mantelpieces we are being asked to manufacture for different new build projects or refurbishments. For details on how we could help your project call us on 01243 373300, or email us on showroom@emsworth.co.uk.

So what timber types top the chart. Oak is still the preferred choice of timber, with waxed finish being the most popular, followed by light Oak, then white primed and Mahogany.

New designs added to the Sussex Collection of Wooden mantelpieces

We have added 5 new designs to our Robert Lynam Sussex Collection of hand crafted wooden mantelpieces.

The Importance of Seasoned Wood on your Wood Stove

The key to running your new wood stove correctly is the fuel.
For a wood stove to burn as the manufacture intended, YOU MUST use wood with a moisture content of  20% or below. Most suppliers of seasoned logs will only supply you with logs that have a moisture content somewhere between 35% and 50%, this obviously is much to high to burn straight away and MUST be suitably stacked for a number of  months in some sort of log store (see below) to season it ready for burning.
Once your store of wood has seasoned down to 20% or below in terms of moisture content it will burn cleanly on your stove producing lots of heat with very little in the way of deposits into the chimney.
At Stone & Fire we are able to supply you with Kiln Dried logs which have been specially dried to about 11% moisture content and are suitable for burning immediately. Available in handy size pre-packed takeaway bags or in larger 1.2m3  and 1.6m3  loads these are the ideal way to start your new wood burning adventure, allowing you to get your new stove up and running straight away.

The fitting of a Carbon Monoxide Detector

CO is a colourless, odourless, tasteless toxic gas produced by fuel burning appliances or vehicle engines.  Mild doses can cause headaches, nausea and flu-like symptoms, higher doses can cause a coma, brain damage or death.  In October 2010 the Government changed the Building Regulations for England to require a Carbon Monoxide Alarm to be installed in the same room as a solid fuel, wood burning stove or open fire for all new installations. However the legislation did not extend to existing housing stock, we would recommend the installation of a CO Alarm for all houses that have a solid fuel or woodburning appliance fitted and in use.

The fitting of a Carbon Monoxide Detector will alert you to the dangers before they have a chance to do harm. Fitted on the wall near the ceiling of the room the fire is in, your CO Alarm will emit a high pitched sound when it detects an unsafe build-up of poisonous fumes. CO Alarms should be treated in the same way Smoke Alarms are, as a vital part of your family’s safety. However a CO Alarm will never be a substitute for the correct and proper installation of your appliance or open fire.
